Before it finished in June of 2013, the National Solar Schools Program [NSSP] distributed more than $217 million to over 5300 Australian schools, for the sole purpose of installing renewable energy systems, including solar.
Even though the NSSP has finished, there are other opportunities available for schools to take advantage of when installing solar systems. Not only will schools benefit from reduced energy bills, in many instances they will also be available to receive credit from their electricity provider for any surplus energy that is sent back to the grid. Of course the level of credit , known as a Feed-in Tariff, will vary from school to school and from each of their carriers.
A school’s meter must be set up to send electricity back to it’s grid before any Feed-in Tariff can be received.
As we know, the sun provides a sustainable and free alternative energy source. The sun’s rays contain radiation that is converted into electricity through the solar panels that would be placed on a schools roof. Because these panels are low maintenance and are self contained, they are easily affixed to any schools rooftop.
Add in an inverter to transform the direct current produced by the sun in tio standard 240 volt alternating current for operating the schools electrical equipment and compliment the grid power supply. All of the electricity produced by the array of solar panels will off-set the schools normal electricity, paying for itself within five years or so.
